Heath Township has a few interesting communities. These are smaller places within the township.
Dunningville: A Historic Spot
Dunningville is a historic place in the southern part of the township. It's located at 42°36′46″N 85°56′55″W / 42.61278°N 85.94861°W. A sawmill was built here in 1855. It was run by people named Dunning and Hopkins. There was once a train station called "Dunning." The local post office used the name Dunningville.
Gilchrist: A Former Train Stop
Gilchrist was another train station. It was on the Michigan Lake Shore Railroad line. You could find it between Dunningville and Hamilton in 1873. It was also a stop on later train lines.
Hamilton: The Main Hub
Hamilton is a community in the northwest part of the township. It's where the M-40 highway crosses the Rabbit River. Its location is 42°40′38″N 86°00′22″W / 42.67722°N 86.00611°W. The first settler, Charles Butler, bought land here in 1835.
Hamilton's Early Names
Hamilton was first known as Rabbit River. It had a post office from 1851 to 1852. A village map was made in 1862, also called Rabbit River. A second post office opened in 1864. It was renamed "Hamilton" in May 1870.
