Cricket Matches at Hamilton Crescent

Cricket has been played at Hamilton Crescent since at least 1862. Early games included matches between "Gentlemen" and "Players." From the 1870s, famous teams like the Marylebone Cricket Club visited. The ground also hosted international teams from Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand.

The first "first-class cricket" match happened here in 1911. This was a big game between the Scotland team and the Ireland team. Hamilton Crescent hosted 20 first-class matches in total until 1994. It also held important international tournaments. These included the 1994 Triple Crown Tournament and the European Cricket Championship in 2000 and 2006.

Rugby Union History

Hamilton Crescent has also been a venue for rugby union. In 1885, it hosted an international rugby match. The Scottish team played against the Welsh team. The game ended in a draw during the 1885 Home Nations Championship.

One of the most famous events at Hamilton Crescent was a football match. On November 30, 1872, the first international football game ever was played here. The Scottish team faced the English team. The game ended with no goals scored by either side. About 4,000 people came to watch this historic event.

In 2002, a special plaque was placed on the clubhouse wall. It remembers this amazing first international match. Mr. John C McGinn, who was the President of the Scottish Football Association, helped put it there.

More Football Fun

After the first game, Hamilton Crescent hosted more international football matches. These took place in 1874 and 1876. Later, these big games moved to a different stadium called the first Hampden Park. Hamilton Crescent also hosted the 1877 Scottish Cup Final, which is a very important football competition in Scotland.
