The Hamilton Farm Petroglyphs, also known as Pictured Rocks or Indian Picture Rocks, are amazing ancient carvings found on rocks. These special artworks are located in Monongalia County, northern West Virginia, near U.S. Route 119. Early Native Americans created these designs by carving into sandstone rock.

These petroglyphs are like a window into the past. They show us what was important to the people who lived here long ago. The site where these carvings are found was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. This means it's a very important historical place that needs to be protected.

What Are Petroglyphs?

Petroglyphs are a type of rock art. The word "petroglyph" comes from two Greek words: "petra" meaning stone, and "glyphe" meaning to carve. So, petroglyphs are literally "stone carvings."

Ancient people made these carvings by removing part of the rock surface. They often used a harder stone to peck, cut, or rub away the outer layer. This revealed the lighter rock underneath, making their designs stand out. Petroglyphs are found all over the world. They are important clues about ancient cultures and how people lived.

Ancient Artworks

When experts looked closely at the Hamilton Farm Petroglyphs in 1961, they found 25 different designs. These carvings cover an area about 18 feet square on the rock. The rock itself is located at a height of 1,460 feet above sea level.

The designs are very interesting and tell us a lot about the artists. Some of the carvings include:

  • Bear tracks
  • Deer tracks
  • Human footprints
  • A snail or spiral shape
  • Human figures with their arms raised up
  • A special carving called a "Spirit Otter"

These symbols might have been used for storytelling, marking territory, or for spiritual reasons. They give us a glimpse into the beliefs and daily lives of the Native Americans who created them.

Protecting History

The Hamilton Farm Petroglyphs are a valuable part of history. They help us learn about the people who lived in West Virginia many centuries ago. Protecting these sites is important so that future generations can also learn from them.

Being on the National Register of Historic Places means the site is recognized for its historical importance. It helps ensure that these ancient artworks are preserved for everyone to appreciate and study.
