About the Hammersmith & City Line
The Hammersmith & City line is part of the famous London Underground, also known as the "Tube." It runs for about 25.5 kilometers (15.8 miles). Along its route, the line stops at 29 different stations.
When the Line Started
The tracks and tunnels for this line were built and opened in different stages. The first parts opened way back in 1863. The full line as we know it today was completed by 1902. However, it was only in 1990 that the Hammersmith & City line was shown as its own separate line on the Tube map. Before that, it was part of other lines.
How the Trains Run
The Hammersmith & City line is a "sub-surface" line. This means its tunnels are not as deep underground as some other Tube lines. They are just below the surface, often using a "cut-and-cover" method of construction. This involves digging a trench, building the tunnel, and then covering it over.
Trains and Depot
The trains used on this line are called S7 Stock. Each train has seven carriages. These trains are kept and maintained at a special place called a depot, which is located in Hammersmith.
Connecting London
The Hammersmith & City line plays an important role in connecting different parts of London. It helps many people travel across the city every day. In one year (2011/2012), over 114 million passenger journeys were made on this line.
