Cricket Career Highlights

Hammond Furlonge began his first-class cricket career for Trinidad in the 1954-55 season. He started as an opening batsman, playing alongside Jeff Stollmeyer.

Early Success in First-Class Cricket

In only his third match, Furlonge showed his skill against the touring Australian team. He scored 57 runs in one innings and an impressive 150 runs without being out in another. This strong performance helped him get selected for the West Indies team.

Playing for the West Indies

Furlonge was chosen to play in the Fifth Test match against Australia in 1955. He opened the batting with John Holt, scoring 4 and 28 runs in his two innings.

He then traveled with the West Indies team to New Zealand for their 1955-56 tour. He did not score any runs in the Second Test match. However, he returned for the Fourth Test and played a very important innings.

A Memorable Innings

In the Fourth Test against New Zealand, Furlonge was the top scorer for the West Indies in their first innings. He made 64 runs in a low-scoring game where the team was all out for 145. This match was special because it was New Zealand's first-ever Test victory.

A cricket writer, Dick Brittenden, praised Furlonge's batting. He noted that Furlonge played with great skill and courage for 210 minutes.

Later Career in Trinidad

After his international matches, Furlonge continued to play for Trinidad for six more seasons. In 1960-61, he scored 106 and 45 runs against Barbados. This was his only game where he was the team captain. He played his last first-class match in 1961-62.
