The Hampden Savings Bank building is a special old building located at 1665 Main Street in Springfield, Massachusetts. It used to be the main office for Hampden Bank, which started way back in 1852. Today, the bank's main office is a few blocks away. This beautiful building was designed in 1918 by an architect named Max H. Westhoff. It has a style called Classical Revival, which looks a bit like ancient Greek or Roman buildings. Because of its history and design, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

What Does the Building Look Like?

The Hampden Savings Bank building is in downtown Springfield. It stands on the east side of Main Street. This area has many other old commercial buildings.

Building Design and Style

The building has two stories and is made of strong stone. It shares walls with the buildings next to it. Its front, or facade, is designed in the Classical Revival style. It has a grand entrance in the middle. Above the entrance, there is a fancy triangular shape called a pediment.

Windows and Details

The second-story windows are tall and set back a bit. They have decorative columns on each side called Ionic pilasters. Above these windows, there is a panel that shows the building's name. The very top has a decorative ledge, or cornice, and a fancy wall called a parapet.

A Bank's History in Springfield

Hampden Savings Bank was created in 1852. Its main goal was to help the many railroad workers in Springfield save their money. The city was growing fast, and these workers needed banking services.

Early Bank Locations

For a while, Hampden Savings Bank shared its space with another bank, the Agawam Savings Bank. This lasted until 1871. Then, in 1899, Hampden Savings Bank moved to a new spot at Main and Front Streets.

Building Its Own Home

The building we see today was built in 1918. It was the first time Hampden Savings Bank had its very own headquarters. The architect, Max H. Westhoff, had just moved to the area from Saranac, New York. He designed this special building just for the bank. In 1952, the bank moved to an even newer headquarters at 19 Harrison Avenue.
