Hampton is an unincorporated community located in Upshur County, West Virginia, United States. An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town. Instead, it's usually governed by the county or state.
How Hampton Got Its Name
The area we now know as Hampton used to have a different name: Ivanhoe. This name was used for a while before the community was renamed.
The current name, Hampton, was chosen to honor a person named Hampton Fisher. It's common for places to be named after important people or families from the area's history.
The Ivanhoe Post Office
Even though the community's name changed, there was a post office in Hampton that kept the name Ivanhoe for many years. This post office first opened its doors in 1891. It served the community by handling mail until it finally closed in 1976. Post offices were very important for connecting communities before the internet and widespread phone use.
