The Han River (also known as Hànxī, which means "dry creek" in Chinese) is a fascinating river in Taichung, Taiwan. It flows mostly south, starting from a place called Gonglaoping in Fengyuan District. Its journey ends when it meets the Dali River in Dali District, close to Provincial Highway 74. Even though it can be quite wide, the Han River often looks dry for much of the year. This is how it got its special name! A popular bike path, the "Han River Bike Trail," follows the river, offering a great way to explore.

Discover the Han River in Taiwan

The Han River is an important natural feature in the city of Taichung, Taiwan. It's part of a larger river system that eventually flows into the Dadu River. Understanding rivers helps us learn about the land and how water shapes our world.

Where Does the Han River Flow?

The Han River begins its journey in an area called Gonglaoping, located in Fengyuan District. From there, it travels south through different parts of Taichung. It continues its path until it reaches Dali District. Here, the Han River merges with another river, the Dali River. This meeting point is near a major road, Provincial Highway 74. The entire length of the Han River is about 33.5 kilometers, which is roughly 20 miles.

Why is it Called the "Dry Creek"?

The name "Han River" comes from the Chinese words "Hànxī," which translates to "dry creek." This name perfectly describes one of the river's most unique features. Even though the riverbed can be wide, it doesn't always carry a lot of water. For much of the year, especially during drier seasons, the amount of water flowing in the river (its "discharge") is quite low. This means parts of the riverbed can appear dry, looking more like a wide creek than a full river. It's a great example of how nature adapts to different weather patterns.

Explore the Han River Bike Trail

One of the most exciting ways to experience the Han River is by cycling along its banks. The "Han River Bike Trail" (旱溪自行車道) is a well-known path that runs right next to the river. This bike trail stretches between Fengyuan and Dali, covering a significant portion of the river's length. It's a fantastic spot for families and friends to enjoy outdoor activities. You can ride your bike, go for a walk, or even jog while enjoying the scenery. It's a wonderful way to connect with nature and stay active in Taichung.
