Hana Makhmalbaf (Persian: حنا مخملباف) is an Iranian filmmaker. She was born on September 3, 1988, in Tehran. Hana comes from a family of filmmakers. Her older sister, Samira Makhmalbaf, and her parents, Mohsen Makhmalbaf and Marzieh Meshkini, are also filmmakers.

Hana is well-known for her movies. These include Joy of Madness (2003), Buddha Collapsed Out of Shame (2007), and Green Days (2009). She has won several awards for her work. For example, Joy of Madness won the Lina Mangiacapre Award at the Venice Film Festival. It also received the Special Jury Prize at Tokyo Filmex. Her film Buddha Collapsed Out of Shame also earned awards. These include the Paolo Ungari UNICEF Prize and the Peace Film Award.

Early Life and Learning

Hana Makhmalbaf started her journey in filmmaking very early. She even attended the Cannes Film Festival when she was only three years old. By age eight, her own work was noticed. The Locarno Film Festival showed her first short film. It was called The Day My Aunt Was Ill.

Hana first wanted to be a painter. But she found painting to be too "lonely." Then, she became interested in making movies. She loved the excitement of being on a film set. Hana once said that hearing "lights, camera, action" felt powerful and exciting.

When she was eight, Hana decided to leave regular school. She then joined her father's film school. This was the Makhmalbaf Film House in her hometown of Tehran. At this school, students learned many art forms. These included painting, photography, and cinema. Hana had to learn everything her classmates were studying. She also had to keep up with her film studies.

After a while, Hana missed her old school. She went back for a few weeks. But she soon realized she preferred the Makhmalbaf Film House. She found the formal school system less exciting.

Filmmaking Career

Hana Makhmalbaf's first documentary film came out in 2003. It was called Joy of Madness. This film was about how her sister Samira made her movie, At Five in the Afternoon. Hana was only 13 years old at the time. She used her young age to film people without them noticing. She captured many honest moments. This happened while Samira was trying to convince people in Afghanistan to be in her film.

People did not take Hana seriously because of her age. This allowed her to film many things without them hiding. She was able to get a lot of natural footage.

When Joy of Madness premiered, Hana was too young to attend her own film screening. This was due to Italian law at the Venice Film Festival. Joy of Madness was also shown at the Cannes Film Festival. There, Hana broke a record. She became the youngest person to have a film screened at the festival. Her sister, Samira Makhmalbaf, had held this record before. Samira was seventeen when she broke it.

Joy of Madness was also shown at the London International Film Festival. This happened in November 2004. Hana and her sister Samira both attended the festival. Samira's film, At Five in the Afternoon, was also screened there.

Feature Films

Hana's first full-length movie was Buddha Collapsed out of Shame. It won an award in 2007 at the Festival du nouveau cinéma in Montreal. It also won two awards from the San Sebastian International Film Festival in Spain. In 2008, it received the Crystal Bear award. This was for the Best Feature Film by the Generation Kplus Children's Jury. This award was given at the Berlinale Film Festival.

Her second full-length film was Green Days. It first showed at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival. This film was a documentary about the 2009 Presidential Election in Iran. Hana used footage from protesters. She combined scenes of violence after the election. This footage came from cell phones and other amateur videos. Green Days also screened at the Venice Film Festival. Hana and her family left Iran soon after the film's premiere.

After Green Days, Hana worked on her father's film, The President. In 2015, Hana announced her next film. It was titled Single Mother. Many of Hana's family members worked on this film. Her father, Mohsen Makhmalbaf, wrote the script. Her brother, Maysam Makhmalbaf, produced it. Hana and her family spent time in Italy while working on the script.
