Hana Makhmalbaf (Persian: حنا مخملباف) was born on September 3, 1988, in Tehran, Iran. She is an Iranian filmmaker. Her older sister, Samira Makhmalbaf, is also a filmmaker. Their parents, Mohsen Makhmalbaf and Fatemeh Meshkini, are also filmmakers.

Hana is known for her movies like Joy of Madness (2003), Buddha Collapsed Out of Shame (2007), and Green Days (2009). She won the Lina Mangiacapre Award at the Venice Film Festival in 2003 for Joy of Madness. This film also won the Special Jury Prize at Tokyo Filmex. Her movie Buddha Collapsed Out of Shame also received many awards. These include the Paolo Ungari UNICEF Prize from the Rome Film Festival and the Peace Film Award at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Her Early Life and Schooling

Hana Makhmalbaf started getting involved with films when she was very young. By the time she was three, she had already gone to the Cannes Film Festival. Her own work gained attention when she was eight. The Locarno Film Festival showed her first short film. It was called The Day My Aunt Was Ill.

Hana first wanted to be a painter. But she felt that painting was too "lonely." Then, she became interested in filmmaking. She found being on a movie set very exciting. In an interview, Hana said that hearing "lights, camera, action" felt powerful and thrilling.

When she was eight, Hana decided she did not want to go to regular school anymore. She then started studying at her father's film school. This school was called Makhmalbaf Film House in Tehran. At Makhmalbaf Film House, students learned about many art forms. These included painting, photography, and cinema. Hana had to learn what her classmates were studying. She also had to keep up with her film academy studies. After a few weeks, she missed her old school and went back. But she quickly realized she preferred the Makhmalbaf Film House.

Her Filmmaking Journey

Hana Makhmalbaf's first documentary film came out in 2003. It was called Joy of Madness. This movie was about how her sister Samira's film, At Five in the Afternoon, was made. Hana was only 13 years old at the time. She used her young age to film many honest moments. Her sister Samira was trying to convince people in Afghanistan to be in her movie.

Hana was able to blend in and not be noticed while filming. People did not take her seriously because of her age. This allowed her to capture a lot of real footage.

When Joy of Madness (2003) was first shown at the Venice Film Festival, Hana was too young to attend. Italian law did not allow her to be there. Joy of Madness was also shown at the Cannes Film Festival. There, Hana broke the record for the youngest person to have a film shown at the festival. Her sister, Samira Makhmalbaf, had held the record before her. Samira was seventeen when she set the record.

Joy of Madness was also shown at the London International Film Festival in November 2004. Hana and her sister Samira both attended the festival. Samira's film At Five in the Afternoon was also shown there.

Hana's first full-length movie was Buddha Collapsed out of Shame. It won an award at the Festival du nouveau cinéma in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in 2007. It also won two awards from the San Sebastian International Film Festival in Spain. In 2008, it won the Crystal Bear for Best Feature Film. This award was given by the Generation Kplus Children's Jury at the Berlinale Film Festival.

Her second full-length film, Green Days, was first shown at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival. This film was a documentary about the time leading up to the 2009 Presidential Election in Iran. Hana used footage from protesters. She mixed in scenes of violence after the election. This footage came from cell phones and other amateur videos shared anonymously. Green Days was also shown at the Venice Film Festival. Hana and her family left Iran soon after the film was released.

After Green Days, Hana worked on her father's film, The President. In 2015, Hana announced her next film, called Single Mother. Many of Hana's family members worked on this film. Her father, Mohsen Makhmalbaf, wrote the story. Her brother, Maysam Makhmalbaf, produced it. Hana and her family spent time in Italy while working on the script.
