Village History: How Hanaford Got Its Name
Hanaford has an interesting history with its name. It was first called "Smothersville." Later, it was renamed "Hanaford" after a person named John P. Hanaford, who was involved in buying and selling land.
In 1916, the village's name changed again to "Logan." This new name honored the John A. Logan Coal Company, which had a coal mine nearby. Since then, both "Hanaford" and "Logan" have been used to refer to the village.

Hanaford is found in the southeastern part of Franklin County, Illinois. You can find it at these coordinates: 37°57′27″N 88°50′21″W.
Illinois Route 34 is a main road that goes through the northeast part of the village. This road can take you about 6 miles (10 km) northwest to Benton, which is the main town of the county. If you go about 5 miles (8 km) southeast on the same road, you will reach Thompsonville.
The village covers a total area of about 1.01 square miles (2.63 square kilometers). Almost all of this area is land, with only a very small part being water.
