Hannacrois Creek is a cool stream, about 20.9-mile-long (33.6 km), located in New York State, United States. It's like a smaller river that flows into a bigger one. This creek is a "tributary" to the famous Hudson River.
The creek starts its journey in a town called Westerlo. From there, it flows through beautiful spots like Dunbar Hollows and over Dickinson Falls. It even helps fill up the Alcove Reservoir, which is a big lake that holds water. After that, it passes through Coeymans Hollow and just touches Greene County before finally joining the Hudson River in Coeymans, New York.
What is Hannacrois Creek?
Hannacrois Creek is an important waterway. It collects water from a large area, covering over 60 square miles (160 km2). This area is called its "drainage basin." Think of it as a giant funnel that gathers all the rain and melted snow, directing it into the creek.
The Rooster Story: How Hannacrois Creek Got Its Name
The name of the creek has a fun story behind it! You might also see it spelled as Hannacroix Creek, or even older names like Haanadrois Creek and Hannekraai.
The name "Hannekraai" comes from the Dutch language and means "Rooster crowing." Long ago, when Dutch settlers first came to this area, they saw something unusual. A rooster was floating down the creek on a block of ice! Because of this funny sight, they started calling the creek Hannekraai, which means "cock-crowing" creek. The nearby settlement of Hannacroix also got its name from this very creek.
Streams That Join Hannacrois Creek
Just like branches on a tree, smaller streams flow into Hannacrois Creek, adding to its water. These are called "tributaries." Here are some of them:
- Silver Creek
- Gulf Creek
- Cole Hollow (stream)
