Hannibal is located right along the Ohio River. You can find it near Ohio State Route 7. A special structure called the Hannibal Locks and Dam is also in this area. Hannibal is connected to New Martinsville, West Virginia by the New Martinsville Bridge.
History of Hannibal
Hannibal was first known as “Baresville.” It was named after its founder, Jacob Bare. Later, a post office opened in the area. This post office was named Hannibal. Soon after, the community's name was changed to Hannibal to match the post office.

Students in Hannibal attend schools within the Switzerland of Ohio Local School District. The community has a building that serves students from kindergarten all the way through 12th grade. This building is home to both River Elementary School and River High School.
