Hans-Jürgen Krupp (born April 15, 1933 – died July 29, 2024) was an important German figure. He was an economist, a university professor, and a politician. He served as the head of the University of Frankfurt. Later, he became a state minister in Hamburg, representing the Social Democratic Party (SPD).

A Life of Learning and Leadership

Hans-Jürgen Krupp was born in 1933 in a place called Elbing. This area was then known as East Prussia. Today, it is part of Poland and is called Elbląg.

His Education and Early Career

Krupp began his studies in 1952. He attended the Technische Hochschule Darmstadt. This school is now known as Darmstadt University of Technology. He finished his studies there in 1957. In 1961, he earned his doctorate degree. This is a very high academic degree.

A Professor and University Leader

From 1969 to 1975, Krupp worked as a professor. He taught economics and social politics at the University of Frankfurt. He also taught at Technische Universität Berlin from 1987 to 1993.

Krupp took on leadership roles at the University of Frankfurt. From 1973 to 1975, he was the vice-president. After that, he became the president of the university. He held this important position until 1979.

In 1979, Krupp became the president of the German Institute for Economic Research. This institute is a big research center. It studies how the economy works.

Serving the City of Hamburg

Hans-Jürgen Krupp also had a significant career in politics. In 1988, he became the state minister of Finance for Hamburg. This means he was in charge of the city's money.

In 1991, he took on even more responsibilities. He became the state minister for Economic Affairs. This role involved managing Hamburg's economy. At the same time, he was also named the Second Mayor of Hamburg. This was a very important leadership position in the city government.

Krupp retired from his public roles in 2001. He passed away in 2024.
