Hans Berndt started playing football at SC Staaken when he was eleven years old. In February 1936, at age 25, he joined Tennis Borussia Berlin. He was a center forward, meaning he played at the front of the team to score goals.

Hanne quickly showed his amazing skills. In his first three seasons (1936–37 to 1938–39), he scored 56 goals for Tennis Borussia. This team was often called the "Veilchen" (Violets).

In the 1940–41 season, Hanne helped Tennis Borussia win the championship in their league. He scored 36 goals that season. They even beat Hertha BSC 8–2 in the last game to win the title.

In 1941, Tennis Borussia played in the final rounds for the German Championship. They played against NSTG Prague and Dresdner SC. Unfortunately, they lost both games to Dresdner SC.

In 1944, Hanne played for VfB Königsberg. He helped them reach the final rounds of the German Football Championship again. He scored three goals in a 4–1 win against LSV Mölders Krakow. He also scored a goal against HSV Groß Born, but his team lost that game.

After World War II, in 1945, Hanne briefly played for Schalke 04. Then, at 33, he led SG Charlottenburg (which was Tennis Borussia Berlin under a new name) to win the Berlin city league championship in 1946–47. He scored an incredible 53 goals in just 20 games that season!

In 1948–49, the club went back to its original name, Tennis Borussia Berlin. They finished second in the city league, with Hanne scoring 19 goals. They also won the Berlin Cup on July 3, 1949, beating Alemannia 1890 Berlin 2–0, with both goals scored by Hanne.

In 1950, Hanne scored 17 goals in 18 games and helped his team win the Berlin championship again. In 1951, Berlin football changed, and some teams became professional. Hanne, at 37, scored 27 goals in 23 games for Tennis Borussia. He was even voted Athlete of the Year in Berlin in 1951!

Hanne Berndt had some knee problems later in his career. In the 1951–52 season, he played only ten games but still scored nine goals. Tennis Borussia Berlin won their third championship in a row that year. Hanne ended his amazing career at 38 years old. He scored over 1000 goals in total during his time as a footballer.
