Hans Grosheide's Early Life and Career
Hans Grosheide went to a special school called a Gymnasium in Amsterdam from 1943 to 1949. After that, he studied law at the Free University Amsterdam. He earned his first law degree in 1951 and a master's degree in 1954.
After finishing his studies, Grosheide worked as a teacher and helped manage special schools for Protestant Reformed children. He did this from November 1954 until September 1963. During this time, he also became involved in politics, joining the board of the Anti-Revolutionary Party.
Becoming a Politician
In 1963, after the national election, Hans Grosheide became a State Secretary for Education, Arts and Sciences. This meant he helped the main minister in charge of education and culture. He started this job on September 3, 1963, in the Marijnen government.
When the government changed in 1965, Grosheide continued his work. He became the State Secretary for Education and Sciences in the Cals government. He kept this role through different governments, including the Zijlstra government and the De Jong government, until 1971.
In 1971, Hans Grosheide was elected as a Member of the House of Representatives. This meant he became part of the Dutch parliament. Soon after, he was appointed State Secretary for Justice in the Biesheuvel I government. He served in this role until May 1973.
Important Government Roles
After leaving national politics, Grosheide continued to serve the public. In January 1974, he was chosen to be the Mayor of Rijswijk, a town in the Netherlands. He started this job on February 1, 1974.
While being mayor, he also worked as a director for the Abraham Kuyper Foundation. In 1978, he took on a new important role as the Director-General of the Custodial Institutions Agency within the Ministry of Justice. He stopped being mayor on the same day he started this new job, July 1, 1978.
In 1991, Grosheide was given another special task. He became the Special Coordinator for European Immigration and Asylum and a Deputy Secretary-General at the Ministry of Justice.
Later Public Service
In January 1993, Hans Grosheide was nominated to be an Extraordinary Member of the Council of State. This is a very important advisory body to the Dutch government. He served in this role from February 1, 1993, until September 1, 2000.
Hans Grosheide was known for being a great manager and someone who understood complex policies very well. He continued to share his thoughts on political matters even after retiring in 2012. He holds a special record as the longest-serving State Secretary for Education. He was also one of the youngest cabinet members after World War II.
Hans Grosheide passed away on December 18, 2022, at the age of 92.
