Christian Democratic Appeal facts for kids
The Christian Democratic Appeal (shortened CDA) is a political party in the Netherlands. A political party is a group of people who share similar ideas about how a country should be run. The CDA was formed by joining three older, big political parties: the Anti-Revolutionary Party, the Christian Historical Union, and the Catholic People's Party.
The CDA's Journey
The CDA party officially started on October 11, 1980. From 1982 to 2006, the party was very popular in the Netherlands. They had strong support in the elections of 1986, 1989, 2002, 2003, and 2006.
In the 2010 elections, the CDA lost many seats. They received less than half the votes compared to the election before. In the 2012 elections, they lost even more seats. However, in the 2017 elections, they gained back some seats. The current party leader is Wopke Hoekstra.
What the CDA Believes In
The CDA supports an idea called Christian democracy. This means their ideas are often based on Christian values. However, the party welcomes members of parliament who are Jewish, Muslim, or Hindu.
The party strongly supports the European Union. They also care a lot about environmentalism, which means protecting nature and the planet. The CDA calls itself a moderate party. This means they try to find a balance between different ideas. They have often worked together with the centre-right People's Party for Freedom and Democracy.
