Hans Rosenthal's Early Life
Hans Rosenthal grew up in Berlin with his Jewish family. His childhood was very difficult because of the rising Nazism in Germany. This led to a lot of unfair treatment against Jewish people.
His father passed away in 1937. Then, his mother died in 1941. Hans and his younger brother, Gert, had to live in an orphanage.
Surviving World War II
From 1940, Hans was forced to do hard labor. His brother Gert was taken away and died during the Holocaust. Many other relatives also died during this terrible time.
In February 1943, Hans managed to escape. He hid in a small garden house in Berlin. Three brave German women helped him stay safe until 1945.
Hans Rosenthal's Career in Media
After World War II, Hans started training to be an assistant director at a radio station called Berliner Rundfunk. Later, he moved to another station, Rundfunk im amerikanischen Sektor (RIAS), which was run by the American forces.
Becoming a Radio Star
At RIAS, Hans became the main entertainment editor. He soon started hosting his own popular radio quiz shows. Some of these shows included Allein gegen alle and Wer fragt, gewinnt. He also hosted Das klingende Sonntagsrätsel and Spaß muß sein.
Moving to Television
Hans Rosenthal then became a big star on German television. He hosted many shows on the ZDF channel. These included Gut gefragt ist halb gewonnen and Rate mal mit Rosenthal.
The Famous Dalli Dalli Show
His most famous TV show was Dalli Dalli. It aired 153 times from 1971 to 1986. The name Dalli Dalli means "Hurry Up!" in some languages.
On the show, famous people competed in fast-paced quiz rounds and skill games. Judges watched their performances. Hans was known for his catchphrase: Sie sind der Meinung, das war ... ? (meaning "So you all think that was... ?"). The audience would then shout Spitze! (meaning "Great!"), and Hans would jump into the air. Because he wasn't very tall, people often called him Hänschen Rosenthal, which means "Little Hans."
Other Important Roles
Hans Rosenthal was also a member of the Central Council of Jews in Germany starting in the 1960s. This group represents Jewish communities in Germany.
He loved to vacation on the island of Föhr and later became an honorary citizen there. From 1965 to 1973, he was the chairman of the Tennis Borussia Berlin football club.
Hans also started a foundation called Schnelle Hilfe in Akuter Not. This name means "Fast Help in Dire Need." The foundation helped people who needed urgent support.
Later Years and Legacy
In 1980, Hans Rosenthal wrote his life story in a book called Zwei Leben in Deutschland ("Two Lives in Germany"). In 1986, he started a media agency with Paul Spiegel. This agency helped actors and TV presenters.
Sadly, in 1986, Hans became ill with stomach cancer. He could no longer host his TV shows. He passed away in Berlin in 1987 at the age of 61.
