A Look Back: Schöneberg's History
Schöneberg was first mentioned in official papers in 1264. This was done by Margrave Otto III of Brandenburg. Later, in 1751, weavers from Bohemia started a new settlement. They called it Neu-Schöneberg, also known as Böhmisch-Schöneberg. This new area was along what is now Hauptstraße.
During the Seven Years' War, on October 7, 1760, Schöneberg faced a big disaster. Austrian and Russian troops attacked Berlin. This attack caused a fire that completely destroyed Schöneberg and its village church.
Alt & Neu Schöneberg (Old and New Schöneberg) became one place in 1874. It was given special town privileges in 1898. In 1920, Schöneberg became a part of Greater Berlin. Its town hall, Rathaus Schöneberg, was finished in 1914. After World War II, this town hall served as the city hall for West Berlin. This continued until 1991. Then, after Berlin was reunited, the city's government moved back to the Rotes Rathaus in Mitte.
