Early Life and Music Start
James Newell Osterberg Jr. was born in Muskegon, Michigan, on April 21, 1947. His parents were Louella and James Newell Osterberg Sr. His father was a high school English teacher. His family lived in a trailer park in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
James started playing drums when he was in fifth grade. His parents bought him a drum set. He later said that his parents supported his interest in music a lot. They even gave him their bedroom so he would have enough space for his drum kit.
Music Career
James began his music journey as a drummer in high school bands in Ann Arbor, Michigan. One of these bands was The Iguanas. He then joined the Prime Movers when he was 18. The Prime Movers gave him the nickname "Iggy" because he had played in The Iguanas.
He later left the University of Michigan and moved to Chicago. There, he learned more about blues music and played drums in blues clubs. He was inspired by Chicago blues and bands like The Sonics and MC5. This led him to form The Stooges.
The Stooges included Iggy Pop on vocals, Ron Asheton on guitar, Ron's brother Scott on drums, and Dave Alexander on bass. They played their first show at a Halloween party in Detroit. The band members nicknamed him "Pop" because he looked like a local person.
The Stooges played a raw and energetic style of rock and roll. They were known for their wild performances. Iggy Pop became famous for his unpredictable stage actions. He was one of the first performers to do a stage-dive, where he would jump into the crowd.
Iggy Pop worked closely with musician David Bowie for many years. This partnership started with The Stooges' album Raw Power in 1973. Iggy Pop began his solo career in 1977. He is known for his unique voice and poetic song lyrics.
His music style has changed over the years. It includes garage rock, punk rock, hard rock, jazz, and electronic music. Many of his songs are well-known. These include "Search and Destroy" and "I Wanna Be Your Dog" with The Stooges. His solo hits include "Lust for Life", "The Passenger", and "Real Wild Child (Wild One)".
In 1990, he had his only Top 40 hit in the U.S. This was "Candy", a duet with B-52's singer Kate Pierson. His song "China Girl" became very popular when David Bowie re-recorded it. Bowie released it as a single from his successful album, Let's Dance (1983).
Iggy Pop has influenced many musicians in different music styles. The Stooges' album Raw Power inspired bands like Sex Pistols and Nirvana. His solo album The Idiot influenced post-punk and industrial artists.
In 2010, The Stooges were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2020, Iggy Pop received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. This award honors musicians who have made lasting contributions to music. His nineteenth studio album, Every Loser, was released in 2023.
