Scott Asheton's Early Life and Music
Scott Asheton was born in Washington, D.C. When he was 14, his family moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan. It was there, in 1967, that he helped start The Stooges.
Forming The Stooges
Scott formed the band with his older brother Ron Asheton, Iggy Pop, and Dave Alexander. Their music had a raw and energetic sound. This unique style became a blueprint for many future punk rock bands.
The band released two albums with Elektra Records. After some changes in the band members, they released a third album, Raw Power, in 1973. The Stooges then broke up the next year.
Music After The Stooges
Even after The Stooges split up, Scott Asheton continued to play music. He joined Iggy Pop for a short tour in Europe in 1978. He also played drums with Scott Morgan in several bands. One of these was the well-known band Sonic's Rendezvous Band.
Scott also recorded many songs with musician Sonny Vincent. He played drums on four of Sonny's studio albums. He also toured the U.S. and Europe with Sonny.
The Stooges Get Back Together
The Stooges reunited in 2003. They stayed active until 2016. In 2007, they released a new album called The Weirdness. After his brother Ron Asheton passed away in 2009, the band continued with guitarist James Williamson. Scott Asheton was the only member, besides Iggy Pop, who was always part of The Stooges after his brother's death.
Scott Asheton stopped performing live after a show in June 2011. Larry Mullins took his place as the drummer. Larry had also played in Iggy Pop's band in the 1990s.
Scott Asheton's Passing
Scott Asheton passed away in March 2014. He was 64 years old. He was survived by his daughter, Leanna, his wife Elizabeth, and other family members. Iggy Pop shared his feelings about Scott's death, saying, "He was like my brother."
