Colonel Hanson Chambers Taylor Jarrett was a very brave soldier who received the Victoria Cross, often called the VC. This is the highest award for bravery a soldier can get in the United Kingdom and many other countries. He was born on March 22, 1839, and passed away on April 11, 1891.
A Daring Act of Bravery
Hanson Chambers Taylor Jarrett was a young lieutenant when he showed incredible courage. He was only 21 years old at the time. He served in the Bengal Army during a major conflict called the Indian Mutiny in 1858.
On October 14, 1858, in a village called Baroun in India, about 70 enemy soldiers were hiding in a brick building. The only way to reach them was through a very narrow street, making it a dangerous situation.
Lieutenant Jarrett bravely called on his own soldiers to follow him. Even though only about four men followed him, he rushed forward into the narrow entrance. Enemy bullets rained down on him, but he kept going. He pushed his way right up to the wall of the building. Using his sword, he fought off the rebels' bayonets, trying to get inside. This amazing act of courage and leadership earned him the Victoria Cross.
The Victoria Cross: An Award for Heroes
The Victoria Cross is the most important award given for extreme bravery in battle. It is awarded to members of the British armed forces and forces from Commonwealth countries. The medal was created by Queen Victoria in 1856. It is made from the bronze of Russian cannons captured during the Crimean War. Receiving the Victoria Cross is a huge honor, showing that a soldier performed an act of incredible courage in the face of the enemy.
