Hapa PDX is a popular restaurant located in Portland, Oregon. It is also known as Hapa PDX Ramen and Whiskey, or simply Hapa Ramen. The restaurant started as a small food cart and grew into a well-loved spot for delicious food.
What Kind of Food Does Hapa PDX Serve?
Hapa PDX serves Hawaiian-Japanese style ramen. Ramen is a tasty noodle soup. They offer different kinds of broth, like tonkotsu, shoyu, miso, and shaka.
One special dish is the G-Special. It is a ramen with a rich pork belly broth. It also has pork belly, fresh spinach, sprouts, and shiitake mushrooms.
The noodles at Hapa PDX are unique. They are thick and squiggly. This special noodle recipe makes them strong enough to travel well. So, your ramen stays good even if you take it home.
Besides ramen, Hapa PDX also serves other snacks. You can find poke, which is a Hawaiian fish salad. They also have wakame salad and other small bites. For drinks, they offer Japanese whiskey, bourbon, and rye. They also have sakes from Japan and Oregon.
The Story of Hapa PDX
The owners of Hapa PDX are Michael and Sarah Littman. They started their business in 2013. It began as a food cart. A food cart is like a small, mobile kitchen.
The food cart first operated in a special area called the Tidbit Food Farm and Garden pod. This was on Division Street in southeast Portland.
In 2017, the food cart pod closed down. Hapa PDX then moved to a new spot. It relocated to Foster Road and 73rd Street.
In 2019, the owners shared exciting news. They planned to open a full restaurant. This new place would be a "brick and mortar" restaurant. That means it would be a permanent building, not a food cart. It opened on Gladstone Street in southeast Portland's Creston-Kenilworth neighborhood.
In 2022, the Littmans announced more plans. They decided to open a second restaurant. It will be called Hapa Kauai. This new location will be in Kauai, Hawaii. The Hawaii restaurant will be bigger. It will have a slightly different menu, but it will still focus on delicious ramen. Abigail Cox, who is the general manager of the Portland restaurant, has also joined the ownership team for the new location.
