A Look Back: History of the House
Serving Soldiers and Sailors
The building first opened in 1926. It was known as the Army and Navy Y.M.C.A. This place was a fun spot for soldiers and sailors from Fort MacArthur. It had 300 rooms where they could stay.
The Y.M.C.A. also offered many cool activities. There was a gym, a running track, and even a swimming pool. Soldiers could also use boxing and wrestling rooms. It had a big banquet room and a coffee shop too.
World War II and Famous Visitors
During World War II, this building was very busy. Over four million servicemen used it for fun and a place to stay. Many famous people visited to entertain the troops. These included stars like Bob Hope and Lucille Ball.
After the war, in 1947, the building changed. It started offering rooms to young travelers. Older citizens could also stay there.
Helping People in Need
From 1967 until 2018, the building was called the Harbor View House. During this time, it became a home for people who needed special care. It was a place where they could live and get support.
A group called HealthView owned and ran the house. They also had a clinic inside. This clinic helped people with their mental health.
Earthquake Repairs
In 1994, a big earthquake hit. It was called the Northridge earthquake. The Harbor View House was damaged. So, the building had to be fixed to make it safer.
During these repairs, some things changed. The swimming pool was filled in. New offices were built where the pool used to be. But many original parts are still there. You can still see the old coffee shop, gym, and running track.
What's Happening Now?
In 2018, the Harbor View House was sold. A company bought it to turn it into new homes and shops. The people living there had to move out in November 2018. This happened because the elevator stopped working.
Now, the building is empty. It is waiting for its big renovation to begin. Soon, this historic place will have a new purpose.
