Exploring the Harbor Area's Historic Treasures

The Harbor Area is home to some of Los Angeles's most historic places. Many of these are also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are important to the whole country!
Two ships in San Pedro are even more special. They are called National Historic Landmarks. One is the Ralph Scott, a fireboat that helped the Los Angeles Fire Department for many years. The other is the Lane Victory, a ship that played a big part in World War II.
The very first historic sites in the Harbor area were built during the Civil War. They were on land owned by Phinneas Banning. These are HCM #21, the Drum Barracks, and HCM #25, the Banning House. Phinneas Banning lived in the Banning House until he passed away.
The harbor has always been important for the military. Fort MacArthur in San Pedro became a military base in 1888. You can find Civil War buildings like the Drum Barracks and a powder magazine there. There are also old coastal artillery batteries from World War I, like Battery Osgood-Farley. You can even see the flying bridge from a World War II ship, the USS Los Angeles.
Many of these historic spots are now museums you can visit. This includes Banning House, Drum Barracks, the Point Fermin Lighthouse, and the old San Pedro Municipal Ferry Building. The ferry building is now the Los Angeles Maritime Museum. Near the Point Fermin Lighthouse, you can see old artillery bunkers. These were used between World War I and World War II. You can also find the beautiful Korean Bell of Friendship there. It was a gift from South Korea in 1976 for America's 200th birthday.
The Los Angeles Conservancy offers tours of the historic sites in downtown San Pedro. These tours let you see inside many of these old buildings.
