Discovering Westside's Historic Places
The Westside of Los Angeles is a newer part of the city. Because of this, it took a while for many of its buildings to be named Historic-Cultural Monuments. In the first 20 years of the Cultural Heritage Commission (from 1962 to 1982), only three buildings on the Westside were chosen. These were the Rocha House, Hangar No. 1 (the first building at what is now LAX airport), and the Ivy Park Substation (an old power station for trains). Even though the Westside became a rich area with amazing buildings in the mid-1900s, it wasn't until the 1980s that many more places started getting recognized as Historic-Cultural Monuments.
