Exploring Historic-Cultural Monuments in South Los Angeles
South Los Angeles has some of the city's most important historic sites. Let's explore a few!
Famous National Historic Landmarks
Three sites in South Los Angeles are so important they are called National Historic Landmarks. This is a very high honor!
- The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum was built in 1923. It hosted the Summer Olympic Games in 1932 and 1984.
- The Watts Towers (HCM #15) are a group of 17 tall, connected structures. Two of them are over 99 feet (30 meters) high! An Italian immigrant named Simon Rodia built them in his free time from 1921 to 1954.
- Baldwin Hills Village (HCM #174) is a special community built in the 1930s. It has lots of open grassy areas and trees, showing new ideas for city living.
West Adams: A Historic Neighborhood
The West Adams district has many historic sites. This area was once one of the richest parts of the city from the 1890s to the 1920s. Many of its grand mansions, Victorian homes, and American Craftsman bungalows are still standing today. About 70 Historic-Cultural Monuments are in West Adams. Some famous ones include the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library (HCM #28), run by UCLA, and the Frederick Hastings Rindge House (HCM #95). This house was built by a man who owned all of Malibu!
Jefferson Park: A Diverse Community
Over the years, Jefferson Park has been home to Japanese-American, African-American, and Louisiana Creole communities. The neighborhood is famous for its many historic American Craftsman houses. A part of the neighborhood is even a special Historic Preservation Overlay Zone (HPOZ) to protect its history. Important HCMs here include the Westminster Presbyterian Church (HCM #229) and the Jefferson Branch Library.
USC, Exposition Park, and North University Park
East of West Adams and Jefferson Park, you'll find the University of Southern California campus, Exposition Park, and the North University Park neighborhood. This area includes the North University Park Historic District and the Menlo Avenue–West Twenty-ninth Street Historic District. Key sites here are:
- The L.A. Coliseum (mentioned above).
- The Shrine Auditorium (HCM #139), where eleven Academy Awards ceremonies were held.
- The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.
- Oil baron Edward Doheny's Chester Place mansion (HCM #30).
- The castle-like Stimson House (HCM #212), which even survived a dynamite attack in 1896!
- The beautiful Victorian Forthmann House (HCM #103).
- The Exposition Park Rose Garden.
- USC's Widney Hall (HCM #70), the oldest university building in Southern California, used since 1880.
- The birthplace of Adlai Stevenson (HCM #35), who ran for U.S. president twice.
Vermont Square, Watts, and South L.A. Gems
This area features the city's oldest library building, the Vermont Square Branch (HCM #264). It was built in 1913 in the Vermont Square neighborhood. This Italian Renaissance style building was funded by Andrew Carnegie.
The Watts Station was named a Historic-Cultural Monument (HCM #36) right after the Watts Riots in 1965. This old wooden railway station, built in 1904, was the only building on Watts' main street (known as "Charcoal Alley") to survive the riots. It became a symbol of hope and new beginnings for the Watts community.
Also in South Los Angeles is the Ralph J. Bunche House (HCM #159). This was the childhood home of Ralph J. Bunche, the first African-American to win the Nobel Peace Prize. It is now a museum.
Historic Churches of South Los Angeles
Many of Los Angeles' most famous churches are in the southern part of the city. These include:
- The domed Second Church of Christ Scientist (HCM #57).
- St. Vincent de Paul (HCM #72), the second Catholic church in the city.
- The city's Episcopal cathedral, Saint John's.
- Its Greek Orthodox cathedral, Saint Sophia (HCM #120).
- The Gothic McCarty Memorial Christian Church, which was one of the first white Protestant churches to become racially integrated in the 1950s.
- The Lombard Romanesque Second Baptist Church (HCM #200), designed in 1925 by the famous African-American architect, Paul R. Williams.
- The Richardsonian Romanesque First African Methodist Episcopal Zion Cathedral (HCM #341).
African-American Music History
This area also holds places important to the city's music history. The Ray Charles Worldwide Offices and Studios became a Historic-Cultural Monument (HCM #776) in 2004. The Dunbar Hotel (HCM #70) was at the heart of the lively Central Avenue jazz scene in the 1930s and 1940s. After hosting the first national convention of the NAACP in the western U.S., the Dunbar welcomed jazz legends like Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Lionel Hampton, Count Basie, and Lena Horne. Former heavyweight boxing champion Jack Johnson also ran a nightclub at the Dunbar in the 1930s. The Lincoln Theatre (HCM #744), built in 1927, was once the pride of Central Avenue, sometimes called the West Coast's version of New York City's Apollo Theater.
