History of the Building

The building was designed by a famous Los Angeles architect named Alfred H. Rosenheim. It was built in 1907 in a style called Classical Revival. This style was inspired by the grand buildings of ancient Greece and Rome, which is why it has large columns and a majestic look.
Because of its beauty and importance, the city of Los Angeles named it a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1968. This title helps protect the building so it can be enjoyed for many years to come.
Famous on TV
This building is so impressive that it has been used as a filming location for movies and TV shows. It was famously used as the courthouse in the popular crime drama TV series Matlock.
A New Purpose

In 2009, the building was sold to a non-profit group called the Art of Living Foundation. A non-profit organization is a group that works to help the community, not to make money.
The foundation carefully restored the building. It officially opened as The Art of Living Center on April 14, 2010. Today, it is used as a community center for events, concerts, and talks. The foundation also uses it for its programs, which teach people about breathing techniques and meditation to help them live happier lives.
