The Kelton Apartments is a special two-story building in Westwood, a neighborhood in Los Angeles, California. It has four separate homes inside. This building is considered very important because of its unique design.
It was designed by a famous architect named Richard Neutra. He was known for his "modernist" style. The Kelton Apartments are part of a group of buildings Neutra designed in the area. Other buildings by him nearby include the Strathmore Apartments, Elkay Apartments, and Landfair Apartments.
History of the Kelton Apartments
The Kelton Apartments were built in 1941. Richard Neutra designed them in a style called the "International style." This style uses clean lines, simple shapes, and often features large windows. Neutra built these apartments for his family members, his in-laws, after they moved from another building he designed, the Strathmore Apartments.
The Kelton Apartments are right next to the Elkay Apartments, which Neutra designed a few years later in 1948. Experts say the Kelton Apartments show how Neutra's design style changed over time. His later work became more "relaxed and lyrical." This building was even featured on the cover of a famous architecture magazine called L'Architecture d'aujourd'hui in 1946.
Because of its special design and history, the City of Los Angeles recognized the building as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument on June 21, 1988. Later, in 2020, it was also added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's considered an important historic place for the whole country.
