The Strathmore Apartments is a special building in Westwood, California. It has eight homes inside. It's known for its history and unique design.

Many famous people once lived here. These include designers Charles Eames and Ray Eames. Actress Luise Rainer and director Orson Welles also lived there.

The building was designed by a famous architect named Richard Neutra. He designed other modern buildings nearby. These include the Landfair Apartments and Elkay Apartments.

History of Strathmore Apartments

Richard Neutra designed the Strathmore Apartments in 1937. He used a style called "international style." This was a type of modern design.

He was asked to design a four-unit building. When he saw the land next door was free, he added four more units for himself. The complex also has a modern bungalow court.

Some early residents, including Neutra's family, had different opinions. They described the building's style as "cold" or "industrial."

Later, scientists from UCLA changed four units. They turned them into condos. This was a unique change for a Neutra building.

On April 8, 1988, the City of Los Angeles recognized the complex. They named it a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. This means it's an important historical place.
