Hardin, Ohio facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Hardin is a small place in Shelby County, Ohio, in the United States. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own local government, like a city or a town does. Instead, it's managed by the county government.

History of Hardin

Hardin was officially planned and laid out in 1816. When a place is "platted," it means its streets and property lots are drawn on a map.

The community was named after John Hardin. He was an officer in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. This war was when the American colonies fought for their independence from Great Britain.

For a short time, from 1819 to 1820, Hardin was the "county seat." A county seat is the main town in a county where the government offices are located.

A post office was opened in Hardin in 1820. It helped people send and receive mail for many years. However, the post office eventually closed down in 1909.
