Haren is a lovely town in the northeastern Netherlands. It used to be its own municipality. In 2019, Haren joined the larger City of Groningen.
Haren is known as a commuting town. Many people who live here travel to work in nearby cities. It is located on a sandy ridge called the Hondsrug. This area has interesting natural features.
You can find one of only two ancient stone tombs, called dolmens, in the province of Groningen here. It is located in the village of Noordlaren. Haren is also home to the largest botanical garden in the Netherlands, called Hortus Haren. The area also includes a beautiful forest called Appèlbergen and a lake named Paterswoldsemeer .
The town of Haren was first mentioned in official records in the year 1249.
In 2012, Haren experienced a very unusual event. A birthday party invitation was accidentally shared widely online. This led to thousands of people showing up, much more than expected! It caused some damage in the town, but thankfully, things were quickly brought back to normal.

Getting Around Haren
Haren has good ways to travel for its residents and visitors. You can easily get to and from the town.
The town has its own train station. From here, you can take trains to nearby cities like Groningen and Assen. There are also regular bus services that connect Haren to Groningen, Assen, and Emmen.
Groningen Airport Eelde is located close to Haren. This airport offers some international flights. It also has many leisure flights to different places throughout the year.
