History of Hares Corner
Hares Corner has an interesting past. It was once a busy stop for stagecoaches. These were like old-time buses pulled by horses. People traveling would stop here to rest or change horses.
Early Days and the Green Tree Inn
The community was also a place where farmers brought their cattle to sell. It was a kind of market for animals. A famous building here was the Green Tree Inn. This was a hotel and a place for travelers to eat and stay.
Sadly, the Green Tree Inn was taken down in 1931. This happened so that a major road, US 13, could be made wider. It was changed into a divided highway, which means it had two separate lanes for traffic going in opposite directions.
Post Office and Population
Hares Corner even had its own post office for a while. It was open from 1863 to 1891. A historian named Harvey Cochran Bounds said that a new post office opened nearby in Farnhurst in 1890. This new post office likely caused the one in Hares Corner to close.
In 1890, about 50 people lived in Hares Corner.
Community Activities
In the 1920s, Hares Corner was known for fox hunting events. These events were hosted by the Hares Corner Community Club. It was a popular activity for people in the area.
