Harlaw Reservoir is a small, man-made lake called a reservoir. It is located in Scotland, within the City of Edinburgh Council area. You can find it nestled in the beautiful Pentland Hills, close to the towns of Currie and Balerno.

What is Harlaw Reservoir For?

A reservoir is like a giant bathtub built by people. Its main job is to collect and store water. This water is then used for important things, like drinking water for homes and businesses. Harlaw Reservoir helps supply water to the city of Edinburgh.

How Was Harlaw Reservoir Built?

Harlaw Reservoir was created by building a special wall called an earth gravity dam. This dam was built a long time ago, between the years 1843 and 1848. It holds back the water to form the reservoir.

A clever engineer named James Jardine designed this important dam. It was built just east of another reservoir called Threipmuir Reservoir. The company that asked for this dam to be built was the Edinburgh Water Company. They wanted to make sure Edinburgh and the areas around it had enough clean water to drink.
