Threipmuir Reservoir is a large, artificial lake in Scotland, in the City of Edinburgh Council area. It is located south of the city of Edinburgh, nestled within the beautiful Pentland Hills. This reservoir is about two miles south of a place called Balerno.

Building the Reservoir
Threipmuir Reservoir was built a long time ago, between 1843 and 1848. It was designed by a clever Scottish engineer named James Jardine. An engineer is someone who designs and builds things, like bridges or dams.
The main part of the reservoir is an earth dam. This dam was built to hold back water and create the large lake we see today. The goal was to increase the amount of water available for Edinburgh. The Edinburgh Water Company was in charge of this big project.
How Water Flows
Water from the reservoir flows out through a special channel called a spillway. This spillway is at the eastern end of Threipmuir Reservoir. From there, the water then flows into another nearby reservoir, which is called Harlaw Reservoir. This system helps manage the water supply for the area.
