The Story of Harlem Spartans
How It All Started (2014–2018)
Harlem Spartans began making music in 2014. They used a local youth center as their music studio. Most artists in the group are from Kennington. Many of them went to Archbishop Tenison's School in Oval.
Their music, like much of UK drill, often talks about their local area. It also mentions rivalries with other groups. They often use unique slang in their songs.
The group is known for its rivalry with Brixton-based group 410. This rivalry has been shown in many songs where they talk about each other. Sometimes, these disagreements became more serious. For example, 410 rapper AM released a song called "Attempted 1.0" in 2018. This song mentioned Harlem Spartans members directly. Later, Skengdo & AM, who are members of 410, received a special order from the police. This order stopped them from going into Kennington or mentioning rival groups in their music.
Growing Popularity and Success (2018–Present)
Some of Harlem Spartans' most famous songs include "Call Me a Spartan" and "Kennington Where It Started." Loski, a member of the group, also has popular songs like "Cool Kid," "Hazards," and "Forrest Gump." "Forrest Gump" even made it onto the music charts. By February 2022, these songs together had over 59 million views on YouTube. In April 2018, Loski released his mixtape called Call Me Loose.
The famous Canadian artist Drake has said he is a fan of Harlem Spartans. He has even shared Harlem Spartan song lyrics on his social media. In 2019, Drake performed on stage with Loski. Drake mentioned that Loski influenced his album Scorpion.
