Oval is a lively area in south London, located within the London Borough of Lambeth. It's best known for being home to The Oval cricket ground. This area is part of Kennington and is about 2.1 miles (3.38 km) southeast of Charing Cross, a central point in London.

History of Oval

The land where Oval now stands was once used for growing vegetables. This was back in the 1600s. The name "Oval" comes from a street plan designed in 1790. This plan was never fully built, but the name stuck.

In 1844, a cricket club called Montpelier leased ten acres of land. This land belonged to the Duchy of Cornwall. Soon after, the Surrey County Cricket Club was formed. They met at a place called the Horns Tavern, which is no longer there.

How Oval is Governed

Oval is part of a local area called a "ward." This ward is named Oval. It belongs to the Vauxhall parliamentary constituency. A constituency is an area that elects one person to represent it in the UK Parliament.

The Oval ward is one of four wards in the northern part of the Lambeth borough. It includes some of Kennington and stretches close to the River Thames. The person who represents this area in Parliament is Florence Eshalomi. She is a member of the Labour Party.
