Harmon is a small community in Morton County, North Dakota. It is located near North Dakota Highway 1806. Harmon is about ten miles north of the city of Mandan.
Harmon is known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it is a special area that the government counts for population. It is not an official town or city with its own local government. The community is part of the Mandan Public Schools district. There is also a nearby area called Harmon Lake Recreation Area.
A Look at Harmon's History
Harmon was first planned on July 23, 1913. It was named after two brothers, George and H.H. Harmon. They were bachelors who lived in the area.
During the 1930s, the community faced hard times. This was during the Great Depression. Harmon almost disappeared completely. However, the original cemetery is still used today.
On January 15, 1951, something unusual happened. Two Northern Pacific freight trains crashed outside of Harmon. In recent times, Harmon has started to grow again. More people have moved to the area.
