Who Was Harpagus?
Harpagus was a trusted general for King Astyages of Media. Astyages was Cyrus the Great's grandfather. A story says that Astyages had a dream that his grandson, Cyrus, would take his throne.
A King's Fear
Because of this dream, King Astyages ordered Harpagus to kill baby Cyrus. Harpagus was scared to do this himself. He knew it was a terrible thing to kill a baby, especially a royal one.
Cyrus's Rescue
Instead of killing Cyrus, Harpagus gave the baby to a shepherd. He told the shepherd to leave Cyrus in a wild place to die. But the shepherd and his wife felt sorry for the baby. They decided to raise Cyrus as their own son.
Cyrus Grows Up
Years later, King Astyages found out that Cyrus was still alive. He was very angry with Harpagus for not following his orders. Astyages punished Harpagus in a very cruel way.
Harpagus's Revenge
Harpagus never forgot the terrible punishment he received. He secretly planned his revenge against King Astyages. He saw an opportunity when Cyrus grew up and became a strong leader.
Helping Cyrus
Harpagus secretly sent messages to Cyrus. He encouraged Cyrus to rebel against King Astyages. Harpagus also convinced many Median nobles and soldiers to join Cyrus.
The Battle of Pasargadae
When the armies met, Harpagus was leading King Astyages's troops. But during the battle, Harpagus and his soldiers switched sides. They joined Cyrus's army. This act of "defection" (switching sides) helped Cyrus win the battle easily.
Cyrus Becomes King
Because of Harpagus's help, Cyrus defeated King Astyages. Cyrus then became the ruler of both Media and Persia. He founded the mighty Achaemenid Empire.
Harpagus's Later Life
After Cyrus became king, Harpagus remained a loyal general. He helped Cyrus conquer other lands. Harpagus led armies that captured important cities and regions.
Conquering Lydia
One of Harpagus's big achievements was conquering Lydia. This was a rich kingdom in what is now Turkey. Its king was Croesus, famous for his wealth. Harpagus also helped conquer other Greek cities along the coast.
Harpagus became a very important official in the new Persian Empire. He was a trusted advisor and military leader for Cyrus the Great.
