History of Harper
Harper was started in 1877 by a group of people from Iowa. The city and Harper County are named after Sergeant Marion Harper. He was a soldier in the 2nd Kansas Cavalry who died during the American Civil War. Harper officially became a city in 1880.
The first post office in Harper opened in May 1877. It was first called Cora City. However, just a month later, in June, its name was changed to Harper.

Education in Harper
The schools in Harper are part of the Chaparral USD 361 public school district. This district was formed when the schools from Anthony and Harper joined together.
Both Anthony and Harper have elementary schools for younger students. The high school for the district is Chaparral High School. It is located between the two towns. The school mascot for Chaparral High School is the Roadrunners.
Harper used to have its own high school, Harper High School. Its mascot was the Bearcats. This high school closed when the school districts combined.
