Who Was George W. Harper?
George W. Harper was born in 1825. His family moved to Ohio from Harper's Ferry, Virginia in 1812. When he was 18, after finishing school, George started a business. He bought and sold cattle in Illinois and became very wealthy.
In 1860, George got married. He and his wife became some of the biggest landowners in Greene County, Ohio. By 1881, they owned about 1,100 acres of land. They lived in the nicest house in Cedarville, Ohio. George also owned a bank in Cedarville called the George W. Harper Banking Company. This bank operated until 1896.
The Harpers also helped with education. Around 1900, Cedarville College was started. The Harpers gave $5,000 to the college. This money helped create a special teaching position in economics.
The Harper Mausoleum and Cemetery Entrance
George W. Harper is remembered by two structures in the Cedarville cemetery. These were built in 1915. The first is the entrance gateway to the cemetery. The second is a family mausoleum, which is like a small building for burials.
These structures are great examples of Egyptian Revival architecture. This style uses designs that look like ancient Egyptian buildings. For example, they have two sphinxes, which are mythical creatures from ancient Egypt. The designs remind people of how ancient Egyptians thought about life after death.
Both the mausoleum and the gateway are made of granite stone. They sit on strong stone foundations. A main road in the cemetery connects the entrance gateway to the mausoleum. This road goes around a small hill where the mausoleum is located.
The mausoleum has columns with palm leaf designs at the top. It also has a decorative border with a vulture and sun disk design. On the double bronze doors of the mausoleum, you can see lotus flowers. The gateway has granite posts that hold cast iron gates. Large granite spheres sit on top of these posts.
Why Are These Structures Protected?
In 1988, the Harper Mausoleum and Memorial Entrance were added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes important historic places in the United States. Usually, cemeteries are not put on this list. However, special parts of cemeteries can be included if they have unique designs.
The Harper structures were considered important examples of early 1900s burial architecture. They are also significant because they are at the very heart and entrance of the cemetery. They help create a special feeling for people visiting the cemetery. These structures are one of two places in Cedarville listed on the National Register. The other is the village opera house on Main Street.
