Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Harriston is a small place in Cooper County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. It's called an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and buildings, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Harriston used to be found near the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad line. This was about three miles southwest of a town called Pilot Grove.

The Story of Harriston

Harriston was started a long time ago, in 1873. A doctor named N. W. Harris planned out the community. He named it after himself, which is how it got the name Harriston.

Harriston's Post Office

In the same year, 1873, a post office was opened in Harriston. This was a place where people could send and receive letters and packages. The post office served the community for many years. It stayed open until 1908, when it closed down.
