Henricus Johannes Bernardus "Harry" Aarts (born March 9, 1930 – died March 25, 2020) was a Dutch politician. He worked in the House of Representatives for many years. This is a very important part of the Dutch government, similar to a parliament. He was a member of two political parties: the Catholic People's Party and later the Christian Democratic Appeal. He served from January 23, 1973, until October 1, 1993.

Harry Aarts's Life and Career

Harry Aarts was born in a city called 's-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands on March 9, 1930. He went to primary and high school in his hometown. After that, he studied political science at the Catholic University Nijmegen from 1949 to 1955.

Early Public Service

Aarts started his public service career in his hometown. He was a member of the municipal council of 's-Hertogenbosch. A municipal council helps run a city or town. He served there from September 1, 1953, to September 2, 1958.

After working at the Heineken brewery for two years, he became an organization advisor. He worked for the Association of Netherlands Municipalities from 1959 to 1965. This association helps different towns and cities work together.

Becoming a Mayor

In 1965, Harry Aarts became the mayor of a town called Berkel-Enschot. A mayor is the leader of a city or town government. He served as mayor from July 16, 1965, until March 16, 1974.

Time in the House of Representatives

On January 23, 1973, Aarts became a member of the House of Representatives. He first joined as a member of the Catholic People's Party. From 1975 to 1978, he was the chairman of the committee for interior affairs. This committee deals with matters inside the country.

In 1980, the Catholic People's Party joined with other parties to form the Christian Democratic Appeal. Harry Aarts continued to be a member of this new party. He also led other important committees. From 1978 to 1989, he chaired the committee for development aid. This committee worked on helping other countries. From 1989 to 1993, he chaired the committee for foreign affairs, which deals with relationships between the Netherlands and other countries.

Harry Aarts left the House of Representatives on October 1, 1993. After that, he served as a special member of the Council of State until October 1, 1998. The Council of State advises the government on laws and policies.

Awards and Passing

On April 29, 1985, Harry Aarts was honored as a Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion. This is a special award given to people who have done great things for the Netherlands.

Harry Aarts passed away on March 25, 2020, in Tilburg. He died from COVID-19.
