Harry Thomas Sr. (born February 3, 1922 – died August 7, 1999) was an American politician. He was a member of the Democratic Party. He served on the Council of the District of Columbia in Washington, D.C. from 1987 to 1999.
About Harry Thomas Sr.
Harry Thomas Sr. grew up in Richmond, Virginia. He left high school early to join the army during World War II. After the war, he moved to Washington, D.C.
He worked several jobs in the federal government. He started as a janitor and later worked in the Department of the Interior. He also worked a second full-time job as a headwaiter. He did this so his children could go to college.
His Time on the City Council
In 1986, Harry Thomas Sr. retired from his government job. He then decided to run for a seat on the Council of the District of Columbia. He ran for the Ward 5 council seat and won the election.
During his time on the council, he was known for helping people in his local area. This is called providing constituent services. He focused more on helping people directly than on creating new laws.
In 1998, Thomas ran for re-election. He was challenged by Vincent Orange and other candidates. Vincent Orange won the election, and Harry Thomas Sr. left the council.
His Family's Public Service
Harry Thomas Sr.'s son, Harry Thomas Jr., also became a politician. He was elected to the same Ward 5 council seat in 2006.
