The Hartford Club is a special private club located at 46 Prospect Street in Hartford, Connecticut. It was started way back in 1873. It's a place where people can meet, eat, and enjoy activities together.
History of the Hartford Club
The Hartford Club began when several local men's clubs joined together. They did this because they were having money problems. In the 1970s, the club started letting women become members too.
The building you see today at 46 Prospect Street was designed in 1901. A famous architect named Robert D. Andrews helped create the plans. The building was finished in 1903 and officially opened its doors on January 1, 1908.
The club offers many things for its members. These include places to eat meals and private rooms for meetings or parties. They also provide special help for members, like a concierge service, and organize fun activities.
The Club's Architecture
The Hartford Club building is in downtown Hartford. It sits on the east side of Prospect Street. It is right across from the Travelers Tower and one block south of the Old State House.
This building has three stories and is built in a style called Georgian Revival. It looks like a very large fancy house from that time. The front of the building is wide with five main sections. The sections on each end stick out a little bit.
The windows on the first floor at the ends are special. They are called Palladian style windows, with three parts. The main entrance in the middle has fancy decorations and columns. The windows on the second floor have rounded tops set into recessed areas. The outer windows on this floor have decorative panels in their arched sections.
Because of its unique design, the clubhouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. This means it is an important historical building.
