The Travelers Tower is a very tall building, known as a skyscraper, located in downtown Hartford, Connecticut, United States. It stands 160.63 meters (about 527 feet) high. When it was finished in 1919, it was one of the tallest buildings on Earth, ranking as the seventh tallest in the world! Today, it is the second tallest building in Hartford. The Travelers Tower is the main office for the Travelers Insurance Company.
A Tall History
The Travelers Tower was once the tallest building in all of New England. This was true until 1964, when the Prudential Tower opened in Boston. Even after that, it remained the tallest building in Connecticut for many years. It held this title until 1984, when another building called City Place I was built.
Building Design and Floors
The tower itself is actually an addition to two other buildings. It starts from the tenth floor of these older structures. Because of this, people sometimes say it has 34 floors in total, even though the tower part is 24 stories high.
The architect who designed the Travelers Tower was Donn Barber. He was a very famous architect who also designed other important buildings in Connecticut. These include the Connecticut State Library, the Supreme Court Building, and The Hartford Times Building.
The Observation Deck
High up on the 27th floor of the Travelers Tower, there is a special open area called an observation deck. From here, visitors can look out and see amazing views of Hartford and the surrounding area.
Home to Peregrine Falcons
The very top of the Travelers Tower has become a special home for peregrine falcons. These are very fast birds that like to nest in high places. People used to watch these falcons using web cameras! However, because the tower needed some repairs, the cameras were turned off. The falcons' nest box was also moved to a nearby building called the Travelers Plaza Building.
