Harthaven is a small community located in the town of Oak Bluffs. You can find it on Martha's Vineyard, a famous island in Dukes County, Massachusetts, United States.
The Story of Harthaven
Harthaven was first started by a man named William H. Hart. In 1871, he bought five pieces of land from a company called the Oak Bluffs Land and Wharf Company. Two years later, he bought three more pieces of land.
How Harthaven Grew
In 1911, William H. Hart bought even more land. This new land was south of Farm Pond. This is when the Harthaven community officially began. It was located between the Oak Bluffs seawall and Sengekontacket Pond.
At first, only members of William H. Hart's family lived in Harthaven. They had chosen Martha's Vineyard as a place to spend their summers. But after 1911, they slowly started to live there all year round.
In 1914, a local newspaper called the Vineyard Gazette wrote about the area. They called it the "Hart Settlement off the Beach Road." Over time, other families from New England, like the Eddys and Youngs, joined the community. Some of them married into the Hart family. For example, Ethelbert Allen Moore married Martha Hart, who was William H. Hart's daughter.
