Harthorne Nathaniel Wingo (October 9, 1947 – January 23, 2021) was an American professional basketball player. He was known for his time playing as a forward for the New York Knicks in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Wingo also played basketball in Europe, where he won several championships.
Early Life and Basketball Career
Harthorne Wingo was born in Tryon, North Carolina. He grew to be 6 feet 6 inches tall, which is about 198 centimeters. He played basketball as a power forward. Before joining the NBA, he attended Friendship Junior College.
Wingo played four seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the New York Knicks. He was part of the team from the 1972 to the 1976 seasons. During his time with the Knicks, he helped them win an NBA championship in 1973. This was a big achievement for the team and for Wingo.
Playing in Europe
After his time in the NBA, Harthorne Wingo moved to Italy. He continued his basketball career there. From 1976 to 1978, he played for a team called Pallacanestro Cantu. With this team, he achieved more success. They won the European Cup Winner's Cup twice. This is a major basketball competition for teams in Europe.
After playing for Pallacanestro Cantu, Wingo joined another Italian team, Superga Mestre. He played for them from 1978 to 1980. Harthorne Wingo passed away in New York City in 2021 when he was 73 years old.
