Hartwig Löger (born 15 July 1965) is an Austrian politician and former business leader. He was the Minister of Finance for Austria from 2017 to 2019. Before that, he was the chief executive officer (CEO) of UNIQA Austria, a big insurance company, from 2011 to 2017.
In May 2019, he became the Vice Chancellor. A few days later, he was sworn in as the acting Chancellor. This happened after the government faced a vote of no confidence, which meant many politicians no longer supported the cabinet. He served as acting Chancellor until June 3, 2019.

Early Life and Education
Hartwig Löger was born in Selzthal, a town in Styria, Austria. He finished high school in 1983 at the Stiftsgymnasium Admont.
He first wanted to become a pilot. He started training with the Austrian Army and passed the pilot entrance exam. However, a knee injury stopped him from continuing this dream. Because of this, he ended up working in the insurance business.
In 1987 and 1988, he studied insurance economics at the Vienna University of Economics and Business. Later, from 1999 to 2001, he completed an international management course at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland.
Career in Business
From 1985 to 1989, Löger worked as an adviser for an insurance company. After that, he joined Allianz, another large insurance company, where he was a sales manager in the Styria region until 1996.
He then worked for Grazer Wechselseitige and Donau Versicherung AG as a sales manager until 2002. From 2002 to 2017, he worked for the Uniqa Insurance Group. He started as a managing director and later became the head of sales. In 2011, he became the chief executive officer (CEO) of UNIQA Austria. He left this role in December 2017.
From 2014 to 2018, Löger was the president of the Sports Union, an organization that supports sports. Since 2011, he has also been involved with the Business Union of the People's Party in Vienna.
Political Career
Hartwig Löger became the Minister of Finance in the government led by Chancellor Sebastian Kurz. He was chosen for this important job by the People's Party.
Since January 2018, Löger has also been part of a special committee. This committee helps decide who should be on the supervisory boards of companies that the Austrian government partly owns.
