Harvey Lee Catchings (born September 2, 1951) is an American former professional basketball player. He played as a center or power forward.
Harvey Catchings played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for many years. His career lasted from 1974 to 1985. He played for teams like the Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Nets, Milwaukee Bucks, and Los Angeles Clippers.
During his NBA career, he averaged about 3.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game. Rebounds are when you grab the ball after a missed shot. Blocks are when you stop an opponent's shot.
Harvey's NBA Highlights
Harvey had some great moments in his career. On December 18, 1976, he scored his highest points in a game. He got 16 points and also grabbed 11 rebounds. This helped his team, the Philadelphia 76ers, win against the Indiana Pacers.
He was also known for his blocking skills. Harvey is one of only 43 NBA players to ever block at least 10 shots in a single game! On April 10, 1981, he blocked 5 shots in just 16 minutes during a playoff game.
Harvey's teams made it to the Eastern Conference Finals three times. Once with Philadelphia and twice with Milwaukee. He even reached the NBA Finals once with the Philadelphia 76ers during the 1976-77 NBA season. This is a huge achievement in basketball!
Family Life and Connections
Harvey Catchings has a very famous family. He is the father of Tamika Catchings, who was a huge star in the WNBA. Tamika played for the Indiana Fever and is one of the best women's basketball players ever!
His other daughter, Tauja, also played college basketball for Illinois. Harvey's grandson through Tauja, Kanon Catchings, is also a talented basketball player. He is committed to BYU for college.
Harvey and his daughter Tamika are both Christian.
Harvey was good friends with his former 76ers teammate, Joe Bryant. Their families spent a lot of time together when they both played basketball in Italy. Because of this, Harvey's children grew up as friends with Joe's son, Kobe Bryant, who became one of the greatest basketball players of all time.
