Harvey Wallis Salmon (born January 26, 1839 – died April 27, 1927) was an important politician from Missouri, a state in the United States. He is best known for serving as the State Treasurer of Missouri, which means he was in charge of the state's money.

Early Life and Work

Harvey Wallis Salmon was born in Greenville County, South Carolina. When he was a child, his family moved to Morgan County, Missouri. At just 13 years old, he started working. He got a job as a store clerk in Versailles, Missouri.

In 1859, when he was 20, he teamed up with his brother. Together, they opened their own general store. This was a big step for him in the business world.

Service During the Civil War

The American Civil War began in 1861. Harvey Salmon joined the Missouri State Guard during the first year of the war. This was a state military force.

Later, he returned to Morgan County. He worked to recruit people for the Confederate Army. During this time, Union forces captured him. He was held as a prisoner for ten months. After he was released, he rejoined the Confederate Army. He served on the general staff, which means he helped with important military plans.

Life After the War and Public Service

After the Civil War ended, Harvey Salmon moved to Clinton, Missouri. There, he started new careers. He worked in banking, helping people with their money. He also worked in real estate, buying and selling land and buildings.

From 1873 to 1875, he held a very important job. He served as the State Treasurer of Missouri. This role meant he was responsible for managing all the money for the state of Missouri.

Later Years

Harvey Wallis Salmon passed away on April 27, 1927. He was buried in Englewood Cemetery in Clinton, Missouri.
